In December,2016 our granddaughter Ivy was admitted to 3F with ITP. The care this hospital provides our children is amazing.
What is congenital heart disease?
"Congenital heart disease" encompasses a range of birth defects that prevent the heart from working properly. This means in some cases, the tiniest of patients require major surgery—often more than once.

IS BORN WITH A HEART DEFECT

IS THE SIZE OF A WALNUT

ARE THE WIDTH OF A MUSTARD SEED

The story of Harmehar
and her heart

When Harmehar was born, her parents Amanjot and Kamaljit heard the telltale cry of a baby. But their joy didn't last long-Harmehar soon fell silent, and wouldn't open her eyes. Something was wrong.

Harmehar was taken to BC Children's Hospital, where at just 72 hours old she had her first open-heart surgery. The operation was complex: a newborn's heart is the size of a walnut, and requires incredible precision. What's more, Harmehar was diagnosed with a severe form of tetralogy of Fallot-a rare condition composed of multiple heart defects that drastically reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood.

While Harmehar's case is rare, one in 100 babies is born with congenital heart disease. The cardiac team at BC Children's sees complex cases every day, and they've been able to improve care and outcomes thanks to donor support.

Harmehar and her heart
show little hearts some love

It's been five years since Harmehar had her first open-heart surgery. So far, she's undergone five more procedures, including a stent placed in her heart last year. Her journey isn't over, but thanks to her passionate team at BC Children's-and the donors who empower them-Harmehar has blossomed into an energetic child who loves to dance and make new friends.

post-surgery to preschool
"I can't 'thank you' enough, for mending a little heart that's now so big, happy and full of love."
– Amanjot, Harmehar's Mom
Donors help
little hearts grow big.

Researchers and health care practitioners at BC Children's are working relentlessly to make sure all babies with heart defects have a bright future like Harmehar. But they can't do it alone.

From a dedicated cardiac surgery suite at the hospital, to critical pieces of equipment like heart-lung machines, donors have empowered experts at the Heart Centre team to bring cardiac care to new heights.

Dr. Mohammed Al Aklabi, head of cardiac surgery, estimates the team has operated on 500 children over the last two years alone. 40 of those were extremely complex cases. Along with cardiology specialists, the surgical team made history last year when they made BC Children's the first Canadian hospital to place a tiny pacemaker inside a newborn.

Donors make this incredible work possible.

All little hearts deserve to grow big
There's still so much more to do.
But here's something to warm your heart: this month, your gift will be matched by a generous partner. That means you'll have TWICE THE IMPACT on advancing care for kids with congenital heart defects.
