Eric Wittig's 10km Sun Run for Food Allergy Research and Treatment!
Hi, my name is Eric. Last year I ran my very first 10km as part of Team Allergy at the 2018 Sun Run! It was a lot of fun and I even beat my time goal!! I am happy to be back for the 2019 race, and will go the distance again for another 10 km. I want to raise money for Allergy Research and the OIT Program at BC Children's Hospital. This will help fund new treatments for the 86,000 other kids in BC who also live with food allergies.
I am 12 years old and have severe allergies to Peanuts, Cashews, Pistachios and a legume called Lupin. Lupin is a well known allergen in Europe, and is starting to show up in more foods in Canada. I found out by accident, it was mixed into my pancakes and it made me very sick. Roughly 30% of the people who are allergic to peanut, will also be to lupin because these foods share a protein.
I became a patient of Dr. Chan at the BC Children's Hospital Allergy Clinic when I was just a one year old. Now, all these years later, I am part of his clinical trial for the peanut patch, which is a desensitization therapy that is currently being researched. The patch contains a tiny amount of peanut protein that gets absorbed into my skin which slowly teaches my immune system to become less allergic to peanut.
Dr. Chan is also researching other ways to help treat BC kids with food allergies, including Oral Immunotherapy. OIT is when you safely train your body to eat a small amount of the food that you are allergic to. Over time, you can tolerate more of that food before an allergic reaction happens. It can help you feel much safer when you are out in the world, especially around food. It can really help a lot of kids better manage their food allergies.
Please join me in making a difference for the 86,000 kids in BC who live with food allergies by making a donation in support of my fundraising efforts.
Thank you for your support!
