Our Story

The spark for Fishermen Helping Kids with Cancer (FHKWC) was the inspirational daughter of a BC commercial fisherman. Moved by her valiant three year battle with cancer, a fellow fisherman came up with the idea of the BC commercial fishing industry holding a herring sale to help all kids with cancerShe passed at the age of 17, just a few days before the inaugural herring sale in December 2011.

This unique herring sale attracts the generous support of a broad cross-section of the commercial fishing industry including fishermen, processing companies and many services and suppliers. All fishing and event costs are donated making it possible for 100% of the funds raised to go toward improving the quality of life for kids with cancer receiving care at BC Children's Hospital.

Due to the great success of this event FHKWC founding members formed a society with a clear constitution and bylaws to make sure we are fully accountable and transparent with the money raised each year. All event proceeds are split between the following three:

1. A Trust Fund which can only be dispensed to BC Children's Hospital Foundation for kids with cancer.

2. An Endowment Fund at the BC Children's Hospital Foundation intended to generate interest revenue annually.

3. A WISH LIST which is our favorite part. We have the privilege to consult annually with doctors and staff to find out which programs, activities and items that are not funded by the hospital are most needed. This ensures that every year funds can go quickly and directly to improving the quality of life of kids with cancer.
